Skarsgard Farms began when Monte Skarsgard's great-granddad, Tollef Skarsgard, emigrated from Norway in 1906. After jumping off the boat, Tollef learned English and then got an education. The third thing he did was break ground on a farm in Makot, North Dakota. That was in the Spring of 1912. Since then, four generations of Skarsgards have kept the farm in production and the fields green for over 100 seasons. Monte's family’s farm story serves as a reminder that our passion for the local and regional organic food movement is not a newfangled thing, but was actually “Seeded in 1912.”
In March of 2003, Monte brought part of the family farm South to the beautiful fields at the Los Poblanos Ranch in Albuquerque. The river valley soil that he played in as a kid, he finally got to call his office. On June 3rd, 2003, farming about 4 acres with the support of 17 members, our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture program) was born.
Since that time, we expanded our cultivated acreage, established an eco-friendly home delivery model, and extended our network of family-owned suppliers and growers looking for a better way to sell their products throughout their community. We are confident that this type of collaborative symbiosis among growers, ranchers, producers and artisans is the face of what a sustainable food landscape will look like in the future.
Join us as we create this change one seed at a time!

Skarsgard Farms - North DakotaThe family farm in North Dakota, seeded in 1912.

Skarsgard Farms, Albuquerque, NM circa 2016

Skarsgard Farms has evolved over the years as the face of agriculture in our region has changed. When we established our CSA and it really started to take off, we realized pretty quickly that our members were looking for something a little different from a traditional CSA model. We started to ask both our suppliers and our members how we could make it work better for them, and our new CSA model was born.

How does a traditional CSA work?
Traditionally, the community members that make up a traditional CSA typically pledge monetary (and/or labor) support to one or more local farms at the beginning of a growing season which goes toward receiving weekly shares of food items, and both members and producers alike share all the risks and benefits of the food production for that season. Members are locked into their weekly shares which cannot be cancelled or refunded, and what you get is what you get, so if you don't like the items included in your share, there is little chance of swapping them out. If you miss the signup period at the beginning of the season, you're probably out of luck, and if you do get a spot in the CSA, it only lasts until the end of the season, leaving members high and dry through the Winter.
Of course, there is a lot more that goes into a traditional CSA with many, many benefits, and while we fully support the traditional CSA model and the farms that participate in them, it limits the flexibility and the convenience that our current and future generations of consumers have come to expect in respect to food. We are helping to bridge the gap between old school (and new school!) farmers and our modernized consumers so that everyone wins.

So how exactly is Skarsgard Farms different?
We recognize that New Mexico is not an ideal point on the map to produce food year-round, so we partner with growers in neighboring states in addition to New Mexico to fill the void in diversity and availability of produce here in the Land of Enchantment. This turns our community into a regional community, inclusive of New Mexico, Arizona, California, Colorado and Mexico so that our members can receive amazing, Certified Organic produce all year long instead of being limited by the seasonality of our local area.

Perhaps our biggest differentiating factor is that we offer FREE home delivery in the large metro cities we service! We also offer multiple delivery days in East Albuquerque, so our most condensed areas have even more flexibility!

All ordering is done online, so you can place your order from anywhere, anytime on any device! Furthermore, order as often or as little as you'd like! It's totally up to you.

Because of the diversity we offer, you have the ability to fully customize your orders, so although we will select some default highlights for you, you can swap them out for different items to suit your personal preferences and add on as many non-produce items as you'd like. We offer a plethora of meats, dairy, baked goods, pantry staples, and more! This really, REALLY helps folks who have allergies or dietary restrictions!

Our members pay for their food PER ORDER, not per season, so you're never locked into any kind of commitment or risk by establishing a membership with us. You pay for what you receive and that's it. You can also sign up at any time of the year since availability of food is not limited by growing seasons! Also to that effect, you can cancel an order at any time! It is completely up to you to decide when you want to receive an order from us or not.

The best part is that you are still supporting local farmers and producers! We provide an option for our suppliers to increase their sales and profit without spending their valuable resources hunting down customers, so that just like you, they have more time to do the things they love. Our suppliers are able to reach a broader customer base by offering their products through our home deliveries, allowing their products to reach people that otherwise may not have easy access. We also help connect our suppliers to one another to help ensure that all of us have everything we need to be fruitful and grow while supporting one another.

Hand over hand, each facet of what we do helps our entire community thrive!
